Fiber Ropes / Cordage

There are two types of fibers used in the construction of ropes and twines, natural and synthetic. The most common natural fibers used are Manila, Sisal, Jute, and cotton, while synthetic fibers such as Polypropylene, Polyethylene, Nylon, and Polyester have become the most popular in today’s marketplace.

Some basic factors in the selection of the right rope for a particular application are:

  • Strength
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Melting point
  • Does the rope float or sink in water (marine applications)
  • Wet strength versus dry strength
  • Elasticity (shock absorbing qualities)
  • Resistance to sunlight (U.V.)
  • Resistance to rot

Characteristics of natural and synthetic fibers:

  • Manila – Excellent heat and U.V. resistance
  • Sisal – Makes a good tying twine
  • Jute – Weak/used for tying twine
  • Cotton – Soft and easy to handle
  • Polypropylene & Polyethylene – Fibers that float/economical
  • Polyester – Very strong/excellent abrasion resistance/low stretch
  • Nylon – High elasticity and shock absorbing qualities/good U.V. resistance

Coordinated Wire Rope stocks a large variety of special ropes primarily for the marine transportation and marine construction industries. ICE BLUE™ COMBO, POLY/DAC™, BLUE STEEL™, 8 BRAID BLUE STEEL™ POLY, SPECTRA® and PLASMA® for the marine industry. See Section 14 for Load Securement ropes
