Nylon and Polyester Web Slings

When looking for a lightweight, flexible and cost effective lifting sling, nylon and polyester web slings are an excellent choice. Flat web slings provide an excellent alternative to heavy and bulky wire rope and chain slings and become great a money savings alternative.

Because nylon and polyester web slings are synthetic slings they are susceptible to potential damage such as cutting, tearing, abrasion, heat and U.V. degradation. The benefits of cost versus weight must be balanced against what type object you are lifting, how you are attaching the slings to the load, what are the possible sources of damage to the slings.

The best way to protect your slings is with wear or cut protection. Corner protection, abrasion protection and cut protection is usually mutually exclusive. Make sure you always have a selection of wear and cut protection pads readily available whenever making lifts with synthetic slings.

When purchasing nylon or polyester web slings, make sure the tagging on your slings is easy to read, durable and has all the information mandated by ANSI B30.9 regulations. Coordinated Wire Rope has some of the best tagging available today. These heavy duty tags are scratch, dirt and oil resistant and the most durable tags made today. Inferior tags can be cause for early removal from service and increase the amount of slings needed to complete the same project.

WARNING! ALWAYS FOLLOW OSHA, ANSI B30.9 AND MANUFACTURERS GUIDELINES WHEN USING THESE PRODUCTS. SLINGS CAN FAIL IF DAMAGED, MISUSED OR OVERLOADED. INSPECT BEFORE USE. USE ONLY IF TRAINED AND NEVER EXCEED RATED CAPACITY ON SLING TAG. PROTECT SLING FROM DIRECT CONTACT WITH EDGES AND CORNERS. DEATH OR INJURY CAN OCCUR FROM IMPROPER USE. SLING ANGLES RESULT IN A REDUCTION OF THE CAPACITIES SHOWN ON THE TAG.

General Information

Webbing

Nylon

The most popular webbings for slings. Nylon is unaffected by most of the elements. The webbing is dye impregnated to give extra protection against UV, and moisture. Elongation is 6% at its rated working load limit.

Monster Edge™

State of the art edge protection built into sling. Monster Edge webbing is woven from nylon, but has a special edge protection woven into sides. Use Monster Edge where slings are subject to abrasive conditions. To specify Monster Edge webbing add a "M" to the sling part #.

Polyester

Polyester should be used in situations where less elongation is desired. Also where slings are subject to acids, bleaching agents, or temperatures exceeding 180° F. Elongation of polyester is 3% at its rated working load limit. To specify Polyester webbing add a "P" to the sling part #.

Configurations

Slings are rated in three configurations, Vertical, Basket, Choker. Visual representations are shown below

Notes: The terms rated capacity, vertical, basket, basket angle, choker and choker angle, are standardized terms used by both OSHA Regulations (Standards-29CFR; Slings-1910.184) and WSTDA Recommended Standard Specifications for Synthetic Web Slings.
Reference points for determining angles and methods used to calculate rated capacities are consistent with both the above mentioned documents. Units of weight are expressed in poiunds (lbs.) per the English system of weights and measures.

Capacities

Web slings are labeled with the rated capacity for vertical, basket and choker hitches (see illustration above). Basket capacities are rated for a basket angle of 90 degrees, and choker hitches are rated for a choker angle of 180 degrees to 120 degrees.

Never exceed a sling's rated capacity!

Basket Angles

Basket angles other than 90 degrees reduce the rarted capacity. Determine the angle using the referenced angle points in the illustration to the illustration to the right. Choose the appropriate loss factor from the table at the right. Multiply the factor by the rated basket capacity on the lable of the sling. The result will be the net rated capacity

Examples:Using a sling with a basket rated capacity of 6,400 lbs. Rated capacity will be affected as shown above when the angle of the sling is changed.

Choker Angles

Choker rated capacities assume a choker angle of 180 degrees to 120 degrees. Angles less than these reduce the rated capacity. Use the illustration below to determine the choker angle. Select the appropriate factor from the table below. Multiply the factor by the choker capacity labeled on the sling. Results will be the net choker angle capacity.

Example:Using a sling with a verticle capacity of 6,400 lbs. and a choker angle of 90 degrees, the rated capacity is reduced as shown in the illustration above.

Tags

A leather tag with the rated capacities and other required information are sewn to the sling. Information is burned into the tag giving the information durability

Serial Numbers

As a practice of New Haven's quality control program, each sling is assigned a specific serial number. Each serial number is logged at our manufacturing facility and references the manufactured date, the New Haven sales order number, and the company or person to whom the sling was sold.
